However, if you head out to Missouri and the Meramec Valley, you actually get a chance to see first hand what incredible sights there are deep underground - with Meramec Caverns!
Meramec Caverns are a complex of mineral formations and colors, that are very beautiful and very rare! These incredible formations and sights took thousands of years to form, and now luckily for you, they are open to the public for exploration!
The best way for the family to see Meramec Caverns are by guided tours, led by trained rangers. The cavern trails are well-lit walkways, and all of the cavern facilities are handicapped accessible, so the ENTIRE family really can go on an adventure!
A trip to these amazing caverns is also a great learning experience for the kids. They can learn about the history of the area, and geology - especially hope these ancient spectacles were formed.
Want to hear something really cool too? On the tour you will get to see both the largest AND the more rare cave formations in the entire WORLD! Pretty special!

The gift shop is a great end to the day, with great souvenirs and gifts to pick up, including rocks and minerals, shirts, clocks, toys and games!
They have group rates available for over 15 persons, so make sure you book in advance! The rates vary on the age of the students
The first 50 minutes of the 80 minute tour are accessible, then the last 30 minutes there is one flight of steps. These can be by-passed with a ramp, but there needs to be assistance from a physically fit helper
The guided-walking tours depart every 20 - 30 minutes from 9am. The tour takes around 1 hr 20 mins to do the whole trip
